Sixth Grade FAQs
Welcome to the CKMS Hawks Family!
We are excited to welcome you to Chief Kanim Middle School! Below are answers to our most frequently asked questions from incoming sixth graders and their families.
Where do I find information?
The CKMS website is updated daily. All back-to-school information will be posted there. At the end of this school year, you will automatically be rolled up to receive ParentSquare communications from Chief Kanim Middle School instead of your current elementary school.
Laptops
Laptops will be assigned during the first week of school.
Lockers
A locker will be assigned to you at the Sixth Grade Open House, which will occur a day or two before the first day of school.
School supplies
A list of needed supplies can be found on the district website.
Cell phone usage
Cell phones (as well as AirPods, earbuds, and headphones) are not allowed during school hours, including class time and passing periods. Students will be asked to leave these devices in their lockers.
Bus routes
Bus routes can be found on the SVSD website.
Arrival and dismissal
The bell schedule is driven by transportation needs and can change each year. For the 2025-2026 school year we start at 7:50 a.m. and end at 2:44 p.m.
Schoology
Families should use Schoology for teacher communication and to track daily work, missing assignments, and grades.
Skyward
Families should use Skyward to maintain current family contact information, track attendance, and check final grades.
Sports
Sixth graders can participate in cross country, wrestling, girls soccer, and track and field.
Sports physical
A current Sports Physical is required and should be uploaded online when you register for sports. Physicals for new sixth graders must be dated Jan. 1 or later in the calendar year the student enters sixth grade and will be valid for two years.
Middle School Q&A Videos
Our CKMS ASB students created a Middle School Q&A video to help incoming sixth graders prepare for the transition to middle school. The videos answer the 15 most frequently asked questions about life at CKMS, offering helpful insights and advice from current students. We hope these student-created resources provide reassurance, build excitement, and help families feel more confident as they begin this new chapter.
